From June through September, afternoon tee times in the Dallas–Fort Worth area can feel like a survival round. You do not have to quit golf for the summer — you just need a smarter plan.

Start earlier than you think

First tee between 6:30 and 8:00 a.m. is the difference between a fun round and a grind. Twilight can work too, but heat soaked into fairways and cart paths still lingers. If your club opens at dawn, take it.

Hydrate before the first tee

Two bottles on the cart is a start, not a strategy. Drink on the range, keep a cooler pack in the cart, and skip the “I will catch up at the turn” approach. Electrolytes help on 95°F+ days more than plain water alone.

Shorten the day when you need to

Nine holes still counts. Many DFW munis post separate 9-hole and twilight rates — Cedar Crest, Lake Arlington, and Fort Worth’s Pecan Valley complex are good examples of places where a shorter loop still feels like a real round.

Club up and swing easy

Hot air can add a little carry, but fatigue subtracts a lot more. Take one more club, make a smoother swing, and protect your lower back. Summer is a terrible time to “find more distance.”

Know when to walk vs. ride

Walking is great exercise until it is not. On red-flag heat days, take the cart, park in shade when you can, and keep towels wet. Your score will thank you more than your step count will.

Gear that actually helps

  • Light-colored, breathable shirts and a wide-brim hat
  • Sunscreen reapplied at the turn
  • Spare glove — sweaty hands ruin contact fast

Want equipment that fits your summer swing?

Heat and fatigue change tempo. If your misses are creeping worse each August, a proper fitting can help you find more forgiving shafts and lofts. Local option: The Club Fix of Texas (Todd Swallow) — TrackMan fitting by appointment in the Dallas area.
